Cuba has a long and proud history of producing top stars in various sports with a particular focus on boxing and baseball. Here are some of the most famous names in Cuban sports history.
Pedro Luis Lazo is a retired baseball pitcher who spent his entire career in Cuba. He was part of the teams that won gold at the Atlanta Olympics in 1996 and silver at Sydney 2000. Another top baseball player was Martin Dihigo, hailed as the best Cuban baseball player of all time. He excelled in every position in Cuba, Mexico, Venezuela and the United States, but never played in the Major Leagues due to the ban on black players, only abolished in 1947.
When it comes to boxing, Teofilo Stevenson stands out as one of the best amateurs in history. He won three Olympic gold medals 1972–1980 and was even tapped to fight Muhamad Ali, although the bout never happened. Stevenson stands alongside Felix Savon as two of the biggest names in Cuban boxing, a heavyweight who only retired due to an age limit imposed by the AIBA.
Cuba also produced many stars in volleyball, including Regla Torres. She was captain of the legendary “Morenas del Caribe” team that dominated the sport from 1992–2000. Torres has since been honored by the Volleyball Hall of Fame in Massachusetts.

United Continues Its Global Expansion
United Airlines keeps soaring to new heights, recently announcing another expansion of its leading global route network.
