Under $100 / Europe

The city of Sheffield sits in South Yorkshire and was known as a hotbed of British industry. These days, locals are putting old industrial spaces to work to other ends. Start the day at The Grind Café, found at the former industrial site at Kelham Island. Tuck into one of the large selection of omelettes, pancakes, waffles, granola and bagels ($10).

Learn about some of Sheffield’s industrial history at the Kelham Island Museum ($9) before taking a stroll back into the middle of town. Once you’ve worked up an appetite, go for lunch at Marco at Milano’s. This Italian restaurant is housed inside an old police station, which lends it an interesting atmosphere. The outdoor area makes for an intimate dining experience on warmer days ($20).

In the afternoon, walk down to the station and continue up the hill on the other side. You’ll pass by an amphitheater that offers great views over the city on your way to the now-abandoned Park Hill estate. This housing project lies empty after the old tenants were evicted, and is now an eerie spot to explore. On your way out, visit the renovated end of the estate, turned into pricey boutique apartments.

Once you’re back in town, go to one of the many pubs on West Street, with The Beehive and The Cavendish among the favorites ($4 per pint). Head to Orient Express for some Chinese food ($12) before carrying on your night at bars such as SOYO and The Forum ($5 per drink).
