Under $100 / Australia

Located in Queensland, Australia, Cairns is a stylish city with a laid-back, tropical vibe. Don’t overlook this sophisticated city during your stay in Australia.

Start your day at Caffiend. The café features gourmet coffees and seasonal food made with locally sourced ingredients. Beyond tasty breakfast items, the café serves as a meeting spot for the community of local artists and musicians. Spend about $10–20 on breakfast. Learn more about Australian plants and wildlife at the Cairns Botanic Gardens. Entry is free, as is the 10 a.m. guided walking tour (Monday–Friday)

Cairns is one of Queensland’s cities with access to the Great Barrier Reef. Many tour operators offer pricey tours. If booking a tour goes above and beyond your budget, opt to take a stroll along the Esplanade along the waterfront. You’ll experience the ocean without spending a dime.

Enjoy a chic lunch at Petit Café. Specializing in crepes, the menu boasts more than 30 varieties of this popular dish. Open daily, spend about $10–15 on lunch. French and Australian wines round out the menu if you wish to partake. Cairns boasts a thriving arts scene. Visit a few galleries including the Contemporary Arts Center, which offers free admission.

Experience traditional Australian cuisine with a view at Dundee’s Restaurant (http://www.dundees.com.au/). Located on the harbor, Dundee’s serves Aussie classics. Stop in early to order from the snack menu with happy hour-style pricing. Dinner costs $20–40. Sightseeing Tours Australia offers a sunset cruise option through Dundee’s if you’re willing to break your $100 budget a bit.
