Adventure Travel in Guinea

Guinea is something of an under-traveled destination, but that shouldn’t put you off.

In fact, the country is full of beautiful places and friendly people, with lots to keep active visitors happy. It’s home to some of the best trekking in West Africa in the Fouta Djallon region, a mountain plateau with grassy highlands and amazing waterfalls, and there are loads of animals to spot, too. Sign up with a local guide and head off to explore the villages and natural sites.

To get far off the beaten track, head to Parc National du Haut Niger. This is one of the last tropical dry-forest ecosystems in West Africa, and you will be one of few visitors. You’ll have to get a guide or a group tour, because there is little infrastructure for visitors.

Another top adventure activity is a trip to the source of the Niger River from Faranah. The area is sacred to locals and you’ll need a local guide to move around sensitively, but it’s an interesting excursion.

Close to the capital city of Conakry you can get down into the Kakimbon Caves, which have inspired many local legends. Take a guided tour and you can descend into the caves for a few hours.
