Clothes Every Backpacker Should Wear

When prepping for your backpacking adventure, it can be difficult to decide what clothes you’ll need and what you won’t. Here are a few items you shouldn’t leave home without.

Nylon Shirts

Quick-dry and breathable shirts are the best option to take on the road. You can hang them out after a wash (many places don’t have dryers) and they allow more air in than their cotton brethren.

Shorts With Pockets

You’ll find yourself needing storage space often while on the road, so it’s important to pack at least two pairs of shorts that have pockets. Ones with zippers or loud Velcro work best, so you can hear and feel when someone tries to pickpocket you. We’re not saying it’ll happen, but better safe than sorry.

Flip-Flops

Shoes are standard, but everyone always seems to leave the sandals at home. That’s a mistake! There are beaches everywhere begging to be seen, and you’re going to want to be able to slip into the ocean at a moment’s notice. Bring a pair of flip-flops along so you don’t have to buy them while you travel.

Dress Shirt

Backpacking with a dress shirt might sound silly at first, but you’ll be surprised how many situations you find yourself in that call for dressier attire. Pack a nice shirt (or dress) that’s suitable for a fancy restaurant or dinner in the home of someone wealthy, just in case.

Jeans or Sweatpants

Some destinations can get cold, even though a lot of backpacking is done in warmer months. Have one pair of jeans or sweats along to help keep you warm on those crisp nights.
