Chicago might be most known for its signature deep dish, but you shouldn’t overlook the city’s other classics. The next time you’re here, be sure to try these signature dishes for a culinary tour of the Windy City.
Harry Caray’s Chicken Vesuvio
Unlike the hot dogs and pizza, chicken Vesuvio doesn’t have much recognition outside of Chicago. An Italian cook allegedly invented it and named it after Mount Vesuvius. While the exact origins are unknown, the city pretty much agrees it’s a Chicago creation. Numerous restaurants will serve it, but one of the best places to start is Harry Caray’s.
Mr. Beef’s Italian Beef Sandwich
Italian immigrants working at the Union Stock Yards first introduced this sandwich in the early 20th century. Bringing home the cheaper cuts for dinner, these workers made the meat more palatable by slow-roasting it in Italian-style broth.
Jim’s Original Hot Dog
Fluky’s first originated Chicago’s distinct selection of toppings in 1929, calling their creation the “Depression Sandwich.” Fluky’s owners were Jewish, requiring an all-beef hot dog usually cooked in hot water and covered in white onions, relish, peppers, tomatoes, dill pickle and yellow mustard. If you’re looking for ketchup, most Chicago hot dog joints won’t have it.
Candyland’s Chicago Mix
You’ve had flavored popcorn before, but you probably never thought to mix them all together. Candyland’s Chicago Mix is a blend of caramel, cheddar and traditional popcorn. The combination might seem a little odd, but the sweet and savory is a favorite snack in the Windy City.
