One of the distinct pleasures of traveling the world is discovering what locals like to eat all over the world. What is considered exotic in the United States is normal in other places.
Different regions also enjoy different meats. Some of them will be surprising for travelers from the United States.
In Peru, guinea pigs are considered a delicacy. Restaurants all over South America serve up guinea pig, throwing an understandable curve ball to travelers who best think of the squeaking animals as pets.
South America keeps the trend going with armadillo meat. Armadillo meat is found more commonly throughout Central America, as well as South America.
Inhabitants of the Andes love to eat alpaca, and used the animal as a food source dating back to pre-Incan times.
In East and Southern parts of Africa, eland meat is popular, Elands are part of the antelope family and some of the leanest meat on the planet.
In New Zealand, the unagi eel is a popular choice. Although eel is not typically seen as a wholly appetizing option, it does have its fans in New Zealand and all over the world.
