When visitors think of France, they imagine drinking wine while walking through the winding streets of Paris. However, there is so much more to the country than just its most famous city and the excellent wine choices. France is a diverse country and there’s a multitude of activities to participate in in the many different regions of the country. Those who don’t branch out further than the main cities are missing out on some of France’s hidden gems.

A town that should be on the radar of any traveler is Menton. This beautiful city in Southern France sits close to Italy and the proximity influenced the French town. Menton is a mix of France and Italy in the best way. It’s a well-preserved town with winding streets and beautiful architecture. Visitors could spend all day walking through and exploring the hidden nooks and crannies. The best time to visit is in February to catch the Lemon Festival, which celebrates lemons.

One of the lesser-visited islands of France is Ile de Porquerolles, which sits off the coast of Toulon. It’s a gorgeous Mediterranean island with beautiful, crystal-clear waters and lush nature. It’s a short ferry ride from Toulon but most visitors pass up a trip to this island in favor for another. It’s said this island inspired Robert Louis Stevenson’s Treasure Island.

Looking for a little bit of Mexico in France? Look no further than Barcelonnette. It’s a cute town nestled in the Southern Alps. The best time to visit this town is in August during the height of festival season. It’s at this time that travelers will question whether they’re in Mexico or France.
