In our first-world society, electronics are everything. Even when we’re not on our smartphones and computers, the thought of missed text messages and unopened emails looms over us. For most people, vacations are no exception to this rule. Travelers stay tuned to social media and work email even when they’re taking time off, resulting in a stimulus overload that prevents them from being able to truly relax. However, with the proper preparation, an electronic-free vacation is plausible.
Get Your Affairs in Order
Away notifications are not just for your work email — let everyone on your social media channels know you won’t be contacting them for a week or two. Additionally, tell close family members and friends the name of your hotel and leave them its number, for strictly the event of an emergency.
Bring Some Back-Up Communication
In the event you do need immediate help when you are away from civilization — whether you find yourself deep in the woods or on a private island — you should always have a contingency plan regarding communication. Bringing a HAM radio is perhaps the best way to call for help when you find yourself stranded.
Make Plans in Person
Once you have severed the ties with all your favorite gadgets, you’ll have to ask others for directions and advice regarding activities and events to attend. Venturing outside your bubble can even be rewarding — you’ll meet new friends, fall into unexpected adventures and, most importantly, you’ll be able to decompress without the buzzing of a phone nearby.
