Tips / Travel

The more you travel, the more you learn about what works for you in terms of packing, preparing, lodging, locations and more, so it’s inevitable you’ll develop your own cache of travel tips likely to result in the most enjoyable experience for you. But when it comes to the broader travel community, there are some tips and tricks that can apply to any traveler. Here are a few that can help you progress toward expert travel status.

Learn how to live out of a carry-on. In the age of checked bag fees, packing everything you need into a carry-on bag is the easiest way to not only save money but also ensure your belongings will arrive when you arrive. Plus, it’s easier on your arms.

Register for TSA PreCheck. If you’re still waiting in long security lines, do yourself a favor and sign up for TSA PreCheck already. You’ll fly through security with ease, leaving you with more time on both ends of the security check.

Fly outside of your loyalty program. Rather than anxiously waiting for prices to drop on your favorite airline, book with another airline that offers a lower fare. Opening a loyalty program with another airline also gives you more choice and flexibility for future flights.

Travel during the low season. While schedules may limit some travelers to high seasons in summer and during holidays, those with more flexible schedules should take advantage of the “shoulder seasons” (spring and fall), when prices tend to be lower and crowds tend to dwindle.

Leave your smartphone behind. You don’t have to leave your phone at home, but lock it in your hotel safe or keep it on airplane mode to dissuade you from checking it every chance you get. You’re on vacation and the only way to reap the benefits of time off is to truly disconnect.
