Cupcakes were the baked good of choice just a few years ago, but donuts are currently reigning supreme in the sugary world of indulgent treats. While you can find these little round marvels in every city in the nation (and plenty beyond), one of the fiercest rivalries in donut domination can be found in Providence, Rhode Island. Though the rivalry is as friendly as the quaint town itself, the fans of both PVDonuts (PVD is the official abbreviation of Providence) and Knead Doughnuts are adamant their preferred bakeries are No. 1, leaving the supplies at both in high demand and, often, short supply.
PVDonuts is best known for its brioche-style donuts and its rotating menu offers impossible-to-resist flavors like maple bacon, mojito lime and cereal. PVDonuts doesn’t have traditional business hours — they close when they run out of donuts, scratching each flavor off the board as it sells out, so come early for the best variety. If a peanut butter and jelly-filled donut or a blueberry lemon basil is more your style, you’ll want to head to Knead, where brioche donuts are also available (so you won’t suffer FOMO at either).
Both produce coveted donuts that inspire road trips, and it’s not worth debating which bakery has the best goods. Eat at both. But don’t wait until you’re starving to show up, because you may end up waiting in a substantial line at each or, even worse, missing out on the day’s fresh treats.
