Just a few blocks from the presidential square lies something of an underappreciated gem of Guatemala City.
While many tourists avoid zones 1 and 2, or indeed the city altogether, the Jazz Cafe is an excellent little place that deserves more acclaim. It is decorated with jazz memorabilia from all over the world, and set around a small stage which hosts regular live performances.
At lunchtime, the Jazz Cafe receives regular customers for its bargain lunchtime special. For just $4.50, you get a three-course meal prepared with the same high-quality ingredients which mark out the main menu.
Come back in the night time and choose from burgers, pizzas, pastas or other main dishes. The prices range from around $6 to $10, which is a bargain considering you get to watch live jazz while you eat.
The restaurant attracts an alternative local crowd and is also a popular spot for people to sink a few beers. The vegetarian burger I had was tasty, and for just $7 a relative bargain.
There are tables spread around the stage as well as in some of the smaller rooms which give off the central courtyard in the colonial-style building. It’s a charming setting to take a date, especially one that likes music.
A main meal and a beer will cost you around $10. It’s good to see bars and restaurants opening in zone 2 of Guatemala City, providing a bit of life to an otherwise residential neighborhood.
