Lukmaan Restaurant has a reputation one of the finest restaurants in Stone Town and it certainly lives up to it. The place itself is a bit unassuming and not in the least bit ritzy — it looks more like a hole in the wall than anything else — but the food more than makes up for the drab appearance.
Inside you’ll find a somewhat bare room with a few tables and chairs, or an outdoor patio if you’d prefer, and a cafeteria-style arrangement. Rather than sitting down and ordering from a menu, guests line up along a buffet and choose what they’d like while the staff piles it high on your plate. You pay before you eat.
The food itself is traditional Zanzibari fare and some of the best in town. The octopus curry is highly recommended by everyone and I have to agree it’s probably the greatest thing on the menu. The biryani with mutton was also a delight.
Like any great restaurant it takes a friendly staff to make it truly shine and Lukmaan has that in spades. They’re happy to chat with you about the food and also make suggestions for other places to eat while you’re in town.
Fair prices and fantastic food make this place a restaurant I can highly recommend to my friends.
