When you think of possible traveling ailments you should arm yourself for, you probably don’t include measles on the list. Although measles was not a disease that was a concern in the United States until recently, it is still a risk in other countries around the world. With the number of measles cases rising to around 150 across North America, it can be alarming that this seemingly eradicated disease could pop up as a sudden threat. As with any local or global health scare; however, the best thing you can do is keep yourself informed of the risks.
The good news — the measles vaccination is often first given to young children around age 1, and then a second and third “booster” vaccination given after age 5. If you have received the vaccination, it is highly unlikely you would be able to contract the disease, even if you were exposed to it.
If you’re unsure about your vaccination record, however, here’s what you need to know. Those who are at the most risk for measles are young children, students and international travelers. Like most illnesses, measles begins with symptoms that are not relatively alarming — runny nose, red eyes, coughing — about a week or two after exposure. However, these symptoms can quickly turn into a widespread, bumpy rash with a very high fever that can cause more serious complications.
If you believe you have not received the recommended vaccinations, you can obtain them through your doctor’s office. Adult patients are typically given two doses of the vaccine about a month apart.
