The changing landscape of Cuba’s tourism and some of the confusion around the United States’ newest policies and restrictions haven’t slowed the island country down. New hotels and resorts catering to various budgets and groups are opening across Cuba and welcoming new waves of tourists.
The Caribbean hotel resort chain Blue Diamond already features more than a dozen properties in Cuba, but will open two more in Cayo Coco and Varadero. The latter will feature spa amenities with 450 rooms for luxury-minded travelers. But budget-minded travelers aren’t left out of the new wave of hotels coming to Cuba.
The Hotel Group Islazul introduced the Vedado Azul Hostel during FITCuba International Tourism Fair in 2019 and became the first property of its kind in Cuba. Situated in the central neighborhood of Vedado in Havana, the hostel features 20 air-conditioned rooms across two floors, bunk beds, a social area with TV and dining area, and WiFi. The location is ideal for students and budget-savvy travelers looking to discover the culture of the surrounding Villa de San Cristóbal de la Habana and cultural centers.
With an eye on LGBTQ+ tourism, Cuba also announced it will open the doors to Rainbow Muthu Hotel. The first LGBTQ+-friendly hotel of its kind in Cuba, Rainbow Muthu is slated to open in Playa Playuelas during the fall of 2019. The 5-star hotel will feature 248 upscale rooms, five restaurants, three bars and swimming pools. The team behind the hotel, Gaviota Group, also plans to open another high-end property in Cayo Guillermo and Cayo Cruz.
Before you head to Cuba, brush up on the latest travel restrictions and regulations. It’s also wise to research travel insurance that can protect your investment whether you’re renting a hotel in one of Cuba’s latest properties or exploring the island.
