New York Marathon 2016

For some people the thought of running 26.2 miles is a nightmare, but others willingly push themselves through the pain barrier to do so.

At the New York Marathon, top professional runners compete alongside those who are running for charitable causes. On Nov. 6, the event will get underway, with participants snaking their way across the Big Apple.

The running is a small part of what has become a massive party in one of the most diverse cities in the world. While applications to run this year are already closed, the marathon brings thousands of spectators onto the streets of New York to cheer on the runners and soak up the atmosphere.

In 2015, there were 49,595 finishers in the marathon. Aside from marking an incredible feat of sporting endurance, their participation does a huge amount to promote healthy living and exercise.

Thanks to the New York Marathon youth programs, more than 200,000 children were introduced to the sport. That is a huge number of kids that could be inspired to make better lifestyle choices. In big cities like New York, it’s not always easy to get kids active. However. the marathon helps to keep people informed and inspired.

If you do want to run in 2017, you can apply from Jan. 17, 2017, onward. Mark the date in your diary if you want to run in one of the most famous marathon races in the world.
