In 2017, Terroir in San Francisco’s South Of Market will celebrate its 10th anniversary and will, as long as it remains open and there is little reason to believe it is going anywhere, have the distinction of the nation’s first all-natural wine bar.
There are certainly no shortage of wine stores and wine bars in San Francisco and the Bay Area, but none can make this claim and the owner will not have his approach to all-natural and organic techniques compromised in any way shape or form.
As Dagan Ministero said, “I’ve been working with natural wine exclusively for over 10 years and I find every day that I still love what I do.”
When you enter Terroir knowing they only offer natural wines, you would be correct in doing a bit of a double take. For many, you just wouldn’t expect the selection to be as expansive nor the location to be anywhere near the size it is. Resplendent in rustic woods and a concrete floor that resembles European antique tiles, it’s truly a lovely space.
It’s both open and cozy at the same time promising an intimate tasting over cheese and charcuterie with a date or the opportunity to keep the car running to grab a case for tonight’s dinner party. However, unless you know your natural wines, I would warn against the latter as the staff is knowledgeable, friendly and never afraid of pouring a taste for the sake of your education.
Beyond the cheese and meats on offer you’ll see that Terroir also provides an extended menu Wednesday through the weekend and it should not be missed.
Terroir also provides a lovely space for private events and checking its website will keep you in the know about special tastings and evenings of fun and frolic while learning something.
