Shere is known as a traditional English village and The White Horse is its best pub.
The village is found in leafy Surrey, and there is no shortage of countryside to explore. However, Shere attracts crowds of visitors throughout the year drawn to its old-world charm and the promise of good food.
Visiting at the weekend it’s advisable to book one of the dining room tables, spread out under the beamed wooden roof. It’s all atmospheric, transporting you to years past when the pub served as lodgings for passing coaches.
These days, the food is the main attraction, with the Sunday roast a particular favorite — prime cuts of meat, well-roasted potatoes and delicious vegetables, covered in a rich onion gravy. It sounds simple, but as anyone who has tried to cook a roast can tell you, it’s deceptively difficult to get right.
Luckily, the chefs at The White Horse got their roasts down to a fine art, with sage and onion stuffing and Yorkshire puddings rounding off the platter. Wash it all down with one of the many beers on offer or explore the extensive wine list.
The whole experience is incredibly relaxing and perfect for a Sunday afternoon nursing a hangover. The White Horse comes highly recommended and, if you’re feeling up to it, you can digest your food on a digestive walk around the pretty environs of Shere.
