Located in the Northern Liberties neighborhood of Philadelphia, Standard Tap is a great neighborhood tavern that serves an extensive variety of craft beer and a unique menu of fresh, seasonal dishes using poultry, meats and seafood from area farms and local vendors.
On a blustery October night I popped into the restaurant wanting a warm meal and local microbrew. Though the wait was long to sit in the dining room, my dining companion and I luckily snagged a spot near the bar after a table opened up on a busy Friday night.
Written daily on hanging chalkboards, the menus were hard to see, and I had to take a picture of the choices with my phone and bring it back to our table. I opted to try a lavender saison from Saint Benjamin Brewing Co., a nanobrewery located close to Standard Tap, and a coconut curry shrimp soup from the menu of not-so-typical pub grub. The delicious soup, featuring plump shrimp and crunchy pumpkin seeds, warmed me right up and left me feeling comfortably full. Though a bit salty, my dining companion’s burger was cooked just right and served with yummy hand-cut fries.
