What to See in the United Kingdom Outside London

Many visitors to the United Kingdom choose to enjoy the metropolitan delights of London at the expense of visiting the rest of the country; however there is plenty to see outside of the capital. Fans of British literature and poetry will surely have heard about the rolling green hills of the Peak District and the rugged Yorkshire Moors. Both of these areas cover large swathes of the country, but are criminally underappreciated given their incredible natural beauty. Dip into the Peak District from the city of Sheffield, or head northeast of Leeds to take in some of the Yorkshire Moors. For those who like the hustle and bustle of city life, Leeds and Manchester have become increasingly cosmopolitan in recent decades. Both are less than three hours by train from London and they are separated by the Pennines, the closest thing to a mountain range in the whole of England. In the south, the buzzing seaside resort of Brighton is known for its strong creative community and independent boutiques, all situated just an hour from London by train. Further along the coast lies Hastings, which is gaining a reputation as a haven for creative types tired of the capital. Head west to marvel at the archaeological site of Stonehenge, whose rock formations baffle researchers to this day, or explore some of the historic castles of Kent to the east. While London is a world city and a major tourist attraction in its own right, escape from the UK capital to explore some of the delights hidden elsewhere.
