Clam chowder is not only a cherished delicacy of Massachusetts, but also a part of its rich culture and history. For years, people of all social classes have come together to enjoy a cup or bowl of this creamy, chunky dish. A few establishments, however, exist in their own superior league.
The Barking Crab in Boston
Overlooking the Fort Point Channel in Boston’s Financial District is one of the area’s most well-known clam shacks — The Barking Crab. Here, patrons will gather around the long outdoor tables underneath a red-and-yellow event awning and eat their basket-served seafood. Most importantly, their chowder is known for its exceptional seasoning and flavor.
Captain Parker’s in West Yarmouth
While from the outside Captain Parker’s digs may seem like an old folks home, those who venture inside will get to enjoy perhaps the best chowder on the Cape. It’s thicker than most, but creamy and able to stick to your stomach.
The Chatham Squire in Chatham
Chatham Squire is the true lobsterman’s watering hole of Massachusetts. Most of the seating is centered on the bar, and its low ceilings, along with the walls, are adjourned with hundreds of license plates, creating an interesting aesthetic. The verdict on their chowder: it’s tangy and pairs nicely with a cold beer.
Schooner’s Restaurant in Hull
If you find yourself traveling to Nantasket Beach in Hull, local favorite Schooner’s is the place to check out. For years, their homemade chowder has fed hungry beachgoers looking to let their sunburns heal.
Union Oyster House in Boston
While new seafood eateries may get a lot of buzz, one of the best clam chowder spots in Massachusetts is also the oldest standing restaurant in the country. Union Oyster House, founded in 1826, may be built from bricks older than any other in Boston, but its chowder is always fresh.
