Trends / Unique Itineraries & Tours

When the thought of traveling to Germany comes to mind, most conjure images of bratwurst, beer and booming music from some of Europe’s most popular nightclubs in Berlin. A whole other world exists apart from the stereotypical German pursuits, a world full of fantasy and wonder lies at the gate of Germany’s copious castles. A scenic train or bus ride out to the countryside from Germany’s bigger cities transports visitors to a fairy-tale land where castles rise from the hills and evoke a sense of wonder and awe.

The most well-known and popular castle in the nation is Neuschwanstein Castle, located on the outskirts of Munich. The former retreat for Mad King Ludwig II was only inhabited for a few short years before it was refurbished for tourism purposes. The towering castle at the foot of the Alps also served as inspiration for Walt Disney´s royal logo and signature castle in Disney World’s Magic Kingdom.

Another cliff-side castle just a short drive from Stuttgart is Lichtenstein Castle, perched high above the steep valleys below. The castle was built to honor knights and is home to a collection of medieval armor and weaponry.

For a more unique castle experience, visit the island castle of Schweriner, built in the middle of a lake by the same name. It is still in use today by the local government, but the halls are also open to visitors who can marvel in its centuries-old existence, complete with a ghost who wanders through the castle’s walls.

The aforementioned castles are just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to Germany´s royal edifices. The stunning Gothic architecture and rich history of each castle will leave visitors with a better understanding of Germany´s fascinating legends.
