The capital city of Portugal’s Madeira region, Funchal is surrounded by the Atlantic and is one of the largest cities in the country. The beautiful and historic city boasts an urban core surrounded by picturesque island life — the ideal destination for world travelers, even on a budget.
Begin your day like a local and head to the Farmer’s Market, or Mercados dos Lavradores. The market is closed Sunday, but opens 7–8 a.m., during the week and closes by 7 p.m., and 2 p.m. on Saturdays. The market opened in the 1940s so you will get some history (recent, by Portugal’s standards) during your shopping trip.
Get your steps in at Madeira Botanical Garden, visiting the 20 acres of pristine blooms. The incredible space is open 9 a.m.–7 p.m., for around €5.50 each, or $5.24
Take time to stroll the historic city streets, established in the 1400s, enjoying the beautiful architecture along the water. Stop in the many beautiful cathedrals and make a point to see some tropical plants and wildlife surrounding the Monte Jardim Palace Museum. Kids enter for free, adults pay €12.50, or $14.
Head down to the beach and take in the sun and laid-back atmosphere and stroll along the quaint shops and museums, including Madeira Story Center, Santa Catarina Park and all the shopping along the marina.
