Tangier is a wonderful spot for anyone interested in visiting Morocco. The best part is it’s extremely affordable.
Start your morning with coffee and crepes at Panorama, a French café on the beach where you can sit on the terrace overlooking the sand. It’s a great place to prepare yourself for the events ahead, and costs less than $10 a meal.
Once you’ve finished, walk to Tangier’s Medina to experience the square before making your way to the Kasbah Palace. The courtyards are open to the public and entrance to the museum will cost less than $2. There are numerous Moroccan and Roman historical artifacts on display.
For lunch, you’ll find A L’anglaise off the main street of the Medina. A local serving of tuna and pastilla will be enough to quench your hunger for, again, less than $10.
Set out on a tour of the surrounding desert sands. Tour companies are numerous throughout the city and should cost you no more than $20. If they’re charging more, keep moving until you find another.
Afterward, head to the Ville Nouvelle for a peak from the top of the Terrasse des Paressex (Terrace of the Idle). You’ll have excellent views over the harbor before setting off for Mendoubia Gardens, a sprawling garden full of fig and dragon trees.
For dinner, the upscale Art et Gourmet will provide you a three-course meal for less than $20. It’s one of the most popular restaurants in town, and expensive by Moroccan standards. Finally, end your day with a trip to the lighthouse at Cap Spartel for the small fee of a taxi ride of $10.
