Reviews / Restaurant

When my husband and I travel, we prefer to stop at as many bar and restaurants as possible, getting small plates, so we can experience more places. On our recent trip to New Orleans, we decided to switch our routine and make lunch reservations at one of the city’s culinary institutions: Commander’s Palace.

We arrived right on time for our reservation. After a warm welcome from the front-of-house staff, the hostess brought us to our table on the second floor. Unfortunately, we were seated in a high-traffic area between the stairs and the restrooms.

Shortly after we were seated, our waiter greeted us and ran through the menu options, including the daily specials, multicourse lunches and drinks. Turtle soup is one of the restaurant’s signature dishes and I knew I wanted to sample it. After much deliberation, I opted for the two-course lunch option. I started with the turtle soup and had corn-crusted catfish for my main course. My husband ordered the gumbo of the day (chicken and mushroom) and the marinated Gulf seafood ceviche.

The restaurant is famous for their 25-cent martinis at lunch, with purchase of an entrée. Yes, you read that correctly: 25 cents. Responsibly, they have a limit of three martinis per diner. I ordered a dirty gin martini to accompany my meal. Our drinks and first course arrived quickly. The turtle soup was finished tableside with sherry. The flavor was rich and unlike anything I’ve tasted before — a standout. The catfish was flavorful, yet light. The crispy fish sat atop corn grits, red beans, roasted tomatoes and vinaigrette. I stole a bite of my husband’s ceviche, which also packed a lot of flavor.

Service at Commander’s Palace is impeccable. We were greatly taken care of by our waiter and the busser throughout the entire meal. The restaurant truly is one of New Orleans’ finest.

After first announcing the plan in 2021, planes fitted with United’s signature interior are finally beginning to appear across the airline’s narrowbody fleet of Boeing and Airbus planes. United flyers are sure to notice these enhancements from the moment they step on board: Each new or updated plane sports remodeled seats, seatback entertainment screens for everyone, Bluetooth connectivity and more, all adding up to a better experience on every journey.
