Top 5 / Africa

South Africa, long beloved by locals and visitors for its otherworldly landscape and unrivaled surfing, has been a player in the wine scene since the 17th century. Head about an hour from Cape Town to the lush Cape Winelands to find vineyards seemingly untouched by time. Here are five wineries to visit on your trip.

Rust en Vrede

Be sure to stop at Rust en Vrede, a Stellenbosch property, for the vineyard’s fine Cabernets, Merlots and Shirazes, and to eat at the restaurant, easily one of the best in South Africa.

Vergelegen

Vergelegen’s estate overlooking the Helderberg Mountains is worth the trip just for the views. The vineyard, circa 1700, has extensive cellars and gardens for touring. Make sure to have a meal at the state’s Camphors restaurant.

La Motte

Feel like you are in France at this charming vineyard in the Cape Winelands. Sample their Sauvignon Blancs, Chardonnays and Shirazes while dining at the property’s restaurant, Pierneef a la Motte.

Boekenhoutskloof

Dating from 1776, visitors are encouraged to try the vineyard’s range of wine labels, including Chocolate Block, in the tasting room overlooking the Hottentots-Holland Mountains.

Crystallum Wines

If you want a smaller vineyard with young winemakers, try this vineyard owned by brothers Peter-Allan and Andrew Finlayson, sons of winemaker Peter Finlayson. They released the first Chardonnay from the vineyard in 2007 and continue to grow with vibrant Pinot Noirs.
