Trends / History

Ellis Island is located in New York Harbor and served as the entryway to the United States for more than 12 million immigrants between 1892 and 1954. Today, more than 3 million visitors flock to Ellis Island each year to tour the Great Hall.

In 1965, President Lyndon Johnson declared Ellis Island part of the Statue of Liberty National Monument. It was originally opened to the public for tours on a limited basis between 1976 and 1984, when it underwent a major restoration. The main building reopened in 1990 as the Ellis Island Immigration Museum. In 2015, the Peopling of American Center opened and the museum was renamed the Ellis Island National Museum of Immigration.

A trip to the island begins with a ferry ride. Ferries depart from Battery Park in New York or Liberty State Park in New Jersey. The Ellis Island National Museum of Immigration is located in the main building of the former immigration station complex. Take a 45-minute audio tour, available in nine languages, to relive the immigrant experience as if you were immigrating to Ellis Island. The audio tour is included with the price of the ferry ticket. Open daily, admission to Ellis Island is free. Ferry prices vary.

Ellis Island is a part of the National Park Service. Visit their website for more details about accessibility.
