Food & Drink

Arcade bars, or “barcades,” are a thing now, and for good reason. Video games aren’t just for kids anymore — gamers are becoming consumers from all walks of life, regardless of age, gender or social status. Take Frank Underwood from House of Cards, for example — maybe his PlayStation pastime was thrown in as a character quirk, but for many, that quirk is a reality. People just like gaming, and there’s something that seems cool and vintage about arcades, whether because the experience is more social than even online gaming or because it’s a reminder of a simpler time.

Barcades are popping up all over the country and nearly every large city has a few. Here are some you’ll definitely want to check out during your travels.

Ground Kontrol in Portland has all the best of a bar — great food, drinks, DJs, trivia and live shows — and mixes it with almost 90 vintage games. The arcade has been open since 1999 but has undergone some moves and a revamp over the years and is now a top-notch venue.

Barcade likes to think it’s the original, located in Brooklyn and king of all barcades to come after it. They even trademarked the name, to make sure they’re the one and only. Craft beer and games from the ‘80s are what’s on tap at this no-frills, straight-up barcade, which now has locations in New Jersey and Philadelphia as well.

Headquarters Beercade has two locations in Chicago. Their Lakeside spot has 37 different games and lots of beer and cocktails, including both arcade and pinball games in this two-story venue. Party spaces are available and just in case you don’t think someone in your group will be down for a night of gaming, there’s live music and big screens to watch sporting events.

Eightytwo in Los Angeles has a rotating selection of games, an outdoor patio and craft cocktails. There are plenty of competitions, as well as a pinball league. With no cover charge, quarter games and no guest list, this barcade with a modern spin is a great alternative to your night out in LA’s downtown Arts District.
