Biking Through Somerset

Cycling through the rolling hills of Somerset is one of the greatest ways to take in one of England’s most beautiful regions. The countryside contains a stunning array of vistas, beachside views and endless plains to discover.

Begin your journey in the northern leg of the county near Bath, where you can leisurely bike along the Fosse Way, the Roman Road from Lincoln. From there you can take the 13-mile bicycle path down to Bristol. If you’d prefer to head eastbound toward London, seek out the Two Tunnels route, which winds through two incredibly long tunnels before connecting with a beautiful canal. Heading southwest will take you along a 14-mile canal towpath that connects Taunton and Bridgewater. Along this route you’ll come across a unique, scale model of the solar system.

If you’re not afraid to drive along traffic, the open wetlands of the Somerset Levels are a sight to behold. It’s here you’ll find sites like the Glastonbury Tor, Chew Valley Lake and the hilly Quantocks, sure to give you a bit of exercise. Mountain bikers will enjoy a stroll near Exmoor, on the western side of Somerset.

Cycling throughout Somerset can be done in just a few days or can be enjoyed as a weeks-long vacation while you stop and enjoy all of the small towns the county has to offer. Either way, it is one of England’s most beautiful regions, full of stunning scenery that demands more than a quick drive-by to enjoy.
