Down a side street in Fort Kochi, India, sits an inviting guesthouse. The accents of brilliant blue, including the heavy-iron gate out front, give even more character than just the name, Dream Catcher Home Stay. Bernard and his wife Sally run the guesthouse from their home downstairs, providing round-the-clock service and an additional amount of security.
Staying at a guesthouse can be a risky choice since website galleries easily distort reality, but Dream Catcher is true to its word with clean rooms and all the necessary amenities — towels, shower, ceiling fan, clean sheets. Bernard is also a wealth of knowledge when it comes to restaurants and activities in the city and will gladly sit down with you over a cup of tea to help you plan your days in Kochi.
Upon arrival, Bernard supplies you with a map of the city and a brief rundown of how to get to the main tourist attractions, along with some local gems. He has deals with the backwater river guides as well as some spas in town, so take him up on those. True to their culture, they happily provide tea at all hours of the day and Sally will cook a traditional breakfast if you let her know in advance.
There are both air-conditioned and non air-conditioned rooms available, depending on budget, and all have WiFi access. It is walking distance to the beach and the shopping center famous for its spices, so is a good low-budget, high-quality option.
