Japan’s most famous mountain now has WiFi access. The country installed hotspots throughout Mount Fuji recently, just in case you’re climbing the volcano and need to post a selfie or two on Instagram.
The mountain now has eight different locations equipped with WiFi hotspots, all run by telecom company NTT Docomo in partnership with local prefecture governments. This is considered an initial trial phase, and will last through September this year. Cottages and resorts around the summit will also be able to provide WiFi to hikers and climbers.
Of course, the WiFi access isn’t just for selfies. It will help with free advertising for adventures on and around the mountain, of course, and it’s something that’s becoming more and more expected by travelers. But it’s also for safety purposes, giving climbers the ability to track weather and climbing conditions.
The WiFi lasts only for about 72 hours after you activate it, but in most cases that’s plenty of time to get off the mountain, whether you’re trying to post a selfie at the summit or pursue the more serious goal of checking conditions.
