We’ve all seen them at the airport — the people hauling a pet carrier through the terminal, looking a little frazzled and the animal in the carrier little more than two saucer eyes staring out. Flying with pets is not easy, but it is possible and sometimes you just have to do it. So how can you go about tackling this particularly daunting task?
Do your research before booking.
Not all pets are airplane friendly, and pets too large to stay in the cabin shouldn’t fly unless it’s an emergency. But if your pet is small enough to fit comfortably in a carrier under an airplane seat, then make sure you price compare the fees associated. A cheap ticket may end up quite costly if the fee to fly with your cat is higher than expected.
Play it safe with carriers.
Many dog and cat carriers are labeled when measured expressly for flying, but check the dimensions against those provided by the airline to be sure. Your pet should have enough space to move around, including turn and lay down, to make the experience a little less stressful.
Bring a leash.
Even if flying with a cat, bring a leash, as you will need to take the pet out so the carrier can be x-rayed. You’ll also want to have them on a leash if they need to use the restroom.
Speaking of the restroom…
Keep some litter and newspaper handy, just in case you need to find a quiet corner of a bathroom stall. For dogs, check with any airports you’ll pass through about their policies.
Bring some treats.
Chances are your pet won’t want them, but just in case they do calm down enough to enjoy a bite to eat, offer them a few favorites. Nothing too heavy and definitely not too much (see above). Also speak calmly to them and give them slow, soothing strokes to let them know everything is okay.
If it’s just too much for them, consider a sleeping pill.
Talk to your vet about pills that will make them drowsy, but not interfere with their hearts in the pressurized cabin. Research is still slim on the side effects of that kind of environment, so play it safe. But sometimes, getting your frantic dog to sleep will make the trip more relaxing for everyone involved, including the dog.
