Iceland is building a new interactive museum to teach visitors about the natural forces that shape the island country.
Lava, the Iceland Volcano & Earthquake Center, will open spring of this year. The museum promises to bring visitors into the “fiery heart” of Iceland. The museum is in the town of Hvolsvöllur, accessible one hour from Reykjavik on the country’s famous Ring Road.
The attraction centers on a 360-degree viewing platform overlooking one of the three major volcanoes of Eyjafjallajökull, Katla and Hekla. Eyjafjallajökull made headlines in April 2010 when it spewed a cloud of ash that disrupted air travel around Europe.
Visitors will also be able to learn about the tectonic forces that challenge the lives of locals and will get to experience a recreation of Iceland’s largest earthquake. Other volcano simulations round things out.
The center will also consist of souvenir shops, a restaurant and a coffee shop.
