Under $100 / Africa

Lilongwe has a long way to go before it ever becomes a top tourist destination in Africa. It’s not completely hopeless, though, and there are plenty of things to see and do here to keep you busy for a day. They’re also easy to do on a budget.

Start the day dining out at Ama Khofi, a chic little restaurant with garden seating and fresh vegetables plucked while you eat. The sandwiches and coffee are some of the best in the city and a meal will cost you roughly $10.

Next, head over to the Lilongwe Wildlife Center before the sun gets too high in the sky for a real treat. The center hosts numerous species of animals from around the country, including monkeys, servals and lions. You can choose from three different walking paths or take a guided tour to see how you can help rehabilitate these creatures in need. Entrance is $6 for adults.

For lunch, make your way back to town and hit up Mamma Mia’s for some truly inspired pizza dishes. These folks put the Italians to shame. A meal here will run you $10.

In the afternoon, seek out the Kamuzu Mausoleum. It’s the resting place of Dr Hastings Kumuzu Banda, a dictator who ruled the country for more than 30 years. The building cost $600,000 to build, making it the most intricate and expensive structure in the city. A local with gladly give you a tour for a couple of dollars.

Once you’re done there, it’s time to fit in a little shopping. Head over to the Old Town post office and experience a traditional Malawi craft market. You’ll find woodcarvings, chairs and even jewelry here to bring home. Expect to spend another $10.
Finally, end your evening at Bombay Place where you’ll find some of the best Indian food in the country. Be warned, a meal with cost $20–30 and they only take cash!
