Each year the stars of global film come to the French city of Cannes for the famous festival.

This year marks the 72nd Cannes Film Festival, which will run May 14–25. The event is known for previewing new films from every genre, including documentaries, and is one of the biggest film festivals in the world alongside the Berlin International Film Festival and the Venice Film Festival.

Events take place in the Palais des Festivals et des Congres, where there are huge numbers of screenings. It’s invitation only, so it’s not a chance for film lovers to see new movies. Rather it’s a place where new films are judged by expert panels before an awards ceremony that can catapult directors to fame.

As a result, Cannes is a high-pressure environment for many, with careers made and broken. The closest most people from outside the industry will get to Cannes is watching to see which films win the awards and looking them up to watch online.

If you want to find out more about the festival, check out the website. Needless to say, hotel prices in Cannes go through the roof in festival time as attendees and those who want to charm their way in flood to the city.
