The Fordwich Arms, Fordwich

Situated some three miles outside the Kentish city of Canterbury, this amazing country pub received one Michelin star for 2019.

To get here, drive an hour or so southeast of London, or hop on the train. It’s easy enough, and you won’t regret it.

The Fordwich Arms recently renovated, with its traditional fittings given a chance to shine after a deep clean. We took a seat in the bar area, which added to the atmosphere, but you might want to request a table in the dining room if you want a quiet night.

The 10-course tasting menu was absolutely incredible, paired with wine that set off each of the flavors. A real highlight was the lobster and ham hock, washed down with Engelgarten.

Staff members were unfailingly polite and friendly, and always ready to explain both the food and wine. The whole operation was incredibly well run, and the atmosphere was great. If you are looking for Michelin-star food without the stuffiness of more traditional restaurants, this is a great option.

The 10-course taster menu with wine and coffee came to $500 for two people, so this is a real treat meal. Worth every penny.
